AUDEBERT

Jean Baptiste was a French painter and engraver who excelled particularly in the illustration of animals and other objects of natural history. He was born in Rocheford in 1759. The large scale images of monkeys reproduced in our collection are taken from Audebert's "Histoire Naturelle des Singes" which was published in 1800 and was followed by "Histoire des Colibris" in 1803. The playful and informative manner in which the monkeys are rendered testifies to this artist's artistic and Linnean objectives in his pictorial record of these endearing animals.
